Care and Maintenance

Now that your custom furniture piece is all settled into your space, it is important that you know the proper way to care for your furniture so that it looks as beautiful as possible for years to come.  These responsibilities may include gentle cleaning with a general household cleaner, to specialized non-toxic restoration cream or spray application.  It all depends on the type of finish used.

General Cleaning

  • Keeping your furniture clean is the first step to maintain and protect the oil finish! Gentle wiping down with a clean cloth to remove dirt and grit regularly is an important first step to protect the wood and oil finish and will help greatly to extend the life of any finish.  DO NOT use bleach or any chemical cleaner.

  • Using a damp rag with clean water is sufficient for the regular cleaning. Remember that wood and water do not mix, so damp means your rag should not be “dripping wet” when cleaning wood.

  • Water will not always get your furniture clean. Rubio Monocoat Natural Soap should be used at 3 or 4 times per year. The soap will remove all dirt and grease thoroughly without leaving a film or affecting the matte natural look of the wood. Apply the soap and water mixture using a damp mop.

  •  Rubio Monocoat Natural Soap should be used twice per year on your table and once per year on less-used surfaces. The soap will remove all dirt and grease thoroughly, without leaving a film or affecting the matte natural look of the wood. Apply the soap and water mixture using a damp rag. Natural Soap is mixed at a ratio of 40:1. One liter of Natural Soap will make 1-20 gallons of cleaning solution. You can also use Rubio Monocoat Refresh Care Spray(recommended), which contains Natural Soap in a premixed easy to use spray bottle. This is especially useful for spot cleaning.

  • Scuff-marks can be easily removed by rubbing the spot with a tennis ball.

General Maintenance (2-5 years):

  •  Rubio Monocoat Oil is composed of natural ingredients.  It is sustainable, renewable, and completely environmentally friendly. Since no artificial toxic hardeners are used to increase the durable life of the finish, periodic rejuvenation is necessary, usually between 2 and 6 years.  Simply wipe Universal Maintenance Oil onto the wood, leave it to react for a few minutes and wipe off all excess oil.  Using UMO when necessary will increase the life of the finish. Leave to dry for 8hrs before use.

Repairing Blemishes or Stains:

  • Black spots or tannin stains occur on wood after coming into contact with moisture and metal, like from cans, flower pots, etc...  These spots are caused from a chemical reaction to acid and water.  Rubio Monocoat Tannin Remover is a ready-to-use product which effectively removes these spots and stains from oiled, untreated or waxed wood surfaces.

  • Scratches can be easily treated with a Rubio Finish, it’s one of the reasons we like it so much! Simply sand the affected area with 180g sandpaper until the blemish is removed, then wipe on some Rubio Monocoat Oil Pure Plus 2c, let it soak in for a few minutes, and wipe off the excess completely. The spot will be dry to the touch in 48hrs and fully cured in 7 days.
